In 1697, the mayor of Amsterdam, one of the directors of the Dutch East India Company, Nicolaas Witsen, organised a work placement for the representatives of the Kingdom of Moscow, who were part of the "Great Embassy", including, as is known, incognito, the young Tsar - Peter Alexeevich, who, after his "work practice" in the shipyards of Amsterdam, became a personal friend of N. Witsen.
Shortly before the company's closure, the surgeon Isaac Titsing, who represented the company, secured support for its endeavours from the Japanese shogun and the Chinese Emperor Aishingyoro Hongli (whose motto of rule was ‘Qianlong’), whom he visited at Beijing's Yuanmingyuan Palace.
In September 2010, the world's oldest share, which was issued by the Dutch East India Company on 9 September 1606, was discovered by a student of Utrecht University in the archives of the city of Hoorn.
